Unlike most shoddy "romance" films Sri Lanka releases every other year, Ganga Addara seemed to me an instant classic, because of two main reasons - the lack of excessive melodrama, and the awesome and electrifying performances. Nimal Mendis' amazing music too was an adding factor. It is no wonder that this remains a top box-office earner in our cinematic history, and can never be matched by any so-called "love stories" of today.

This, at least I can say, remains a true vindication of the beauty of the romance genre in Sri Lankan cinema, without going over to the sentimental and melodramatic side, filled with noisy musical numbers quite unneeded, which distinguishes this box-office classic from the trash of today.
