BIOGRAPHY

American trained musician and film composer, Lakshman Joseph de Saram is widely considered to be Sri Lanka’s foremost violinist. On his return to Sri Lanka, Joseph de Saram began to explore the indigenous music of his homeland. Working with the nation’s most important composer for over ten years, Dr. Premasiri Khemadasa, he felt inspired to start writing his own original compositions.

Joseph de Saram is credited by industry professionals and the press for re-defining the “Nouvelle Vogue” sound of South Asian cinema with the ground-breaking scores to many award winning films. The music for Mille Soya was his first significant work. The film won the prestigious Sarasaviya award in 2005 for best music direction, as well as the international Signis award for most outstanding original music for a Sri Lankan film. He also wrote the music for the globally acclaimed film August Sun, helmed by Prasanna Vithanage. 2008 saw him complete the music for the Uberto Pasolini directed film Machan, Prasanna Vithanage’s Akasa Kusum and Cannes award winner Vimukthi Jayasundara’s Ahasin Watai. He is the Founder Artistic Director and Concertmaster of the Chamber Music Society of Colombo. The Society is being hailed as one of the regions finest Chamber Ensembles. He is also a visiting lecturer at the University of the Visual & Performing Arts in Sri Lanka.
